Suspected Stalker Questioned: 'However Suppose I Could Be Madeleine?'
A woman indicted with harassing Kate McCann allegedly recorded her a voicemail message which questioned: "imagine I am Madeleine?"
Julia Wandelt, twenty-four, who witnesses stated has persistently asserted she was the missing Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are on trial accused with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February the current year.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court heard call records and evidence recovered from phones documented Ms Wandelt repeatedly requesting Madeleine's mother for a biological test during the past two years.
Madeleine's disappearance in 2007 - when she was three years old during a trip in Portugal - is among the most publicized child disappearance cases and continues to be open.
'I Am Not Seeking Money'
A separate phone message, presented in court, documented Ms Wandelt stating: "I know I'm heavy and unattractive like Madeleine used to be, but I believe what I feel."
While a separate message of Ms Wandelt's one-way conversations with Mrs McCann's answerphone said: "Suppose there is a slight possibility that I'm her? Then what? Is that not crucial for you?"
"I don't want money, I have a living here in Poland, I just want to know," the recording stated.
The panel was told that through electronic messages, text messages and calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a genetic test, transmitted childhood photos to her phone in a effort to show a likeness to Mrs McCann's vanished daughter, and claimed to have "flashbacks" from a early life with the McCanns.
The investigator, an intelligence analyst with the police force who compiled the evidence, informed the court there "showed no any answers" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt also reached out to acquaintances of the McCanns, according to the communication logs.
On 9 October 2024, Mr McCann answered a communication from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, saying she had "a wrong number."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt deposited a recording on Mrs McCann's recording stating "I won't give up and I intend to demonstrate my position."
The court was informed the co-defendant established a connection through digital means with Ms Wandelt preceding accompanying her on a trip to the McCanns' property in that area in that winter.
Communication data showed Mrs Spragg had reached out through communication app to Mrs McCann to state the media had depicted Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she deserved to be taken seriously in the months preceding the appearance to the village, that area, in last December.
The court heard message exchanges between the two accused, in last November, considering endeavoring to acquire Mrs McCann's DNA samples from her garbage or from utensils at a eating establishment.
"We need to take action," Mrs Spragg informed Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the appearance to their home, the defendant transmitted a message which said: "We find ourselves sitting outside the McCanns' residence with our vehicle dark similar to detectives. I wanted to achieve this with another person I didn't imagine I would be doing that with the McCanns."
The case continues.
