Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The former official stated he would withdraw from public positions after Congressional panel disclosed his regular messages with the financier

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a series of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.

The economist commented in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the promise of the company, and look forward tracking their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who formerly led the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed communications showed that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the day before his 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it understood Summers' decision to resign.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the organization remarked.

Legislative Background

This news comes after both chambers of Congress decided on recently to approve a bill that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Epstein.

The bill will subsequently proceed to the office of President Trump for approval. The President has indicated he plans to approve the bill, after reversing his position on the subject following pushback from his supporters.

Email Contents

A group of financier-linked correspondence disclosed by the legislative panel last week included several well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those people.

The emails showed that Summers and the financier dined together frequently, with he often seeking to link the academic to influential international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were shared with the public, Summers said he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to persist in corresponding with the financier".

He added that he wanted "to reestablish faith and fix bonds with the individuals nearest to me".

Career Background

Summers occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He presided over the institution from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public roles recently on this week, he indicated he would continue his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following his statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal think tank in the capital where he was a prominent member, announced that the economist was no longer connected with the group.

He joined the directorate of the AI company, which makes ChatGPT, in last year - following a defeated move to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
