Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the early candidates in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The previous coach was sacked on the weekend after the team's 10-match winless start to the top-flight campaign.

And both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the club - are among the options to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.

Edwards is currently at another club, which would create a potential hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.

Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town manager - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong contender for the position.

The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves directors as they start the search of hiring a new manager.

O'Neil is additionally emerging as a surprise candidate, although he would be a shock appointment considering he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.

The former West Ham United player is out of work meaning the club would not be required to provide any compensation.
